The Denali Experience

Denali National Park - On our Alaska trip we added an extension giving us five days at the end of the road running through the park - a five hour bus, 95 mile trip on a dirt road through the heart of its immediately accessible portion.  Without a special photographers’ permit extremely hard to obtain, access is by lodge bus or shuttle bus making stops on demand and running on a set schedule.  The weather remained cloudy throughout our stay and we never saw the top 6000 feet of Mt. McKinley (Denali in native language and reference).  A flightseeing trip took us only to cloud cover at 14,000 feet for an exciting although disappointing close up of the mountain’s many faces and the glaciers continually moving continually towards to water.  From the air, the effects of global warming become frighteningly apparent as so many of them are obviously melting back while others actually continue to grow.
