Scotland
The
natural and archeological history of the Highlands and islands of
Scotland were the subject matter of a fascinating Elder Hostel Program my wife
and I participated in at Aigas Field Centre in the middle of the Highlands. Side trips
included the islands of Skye and Orkney, the principal island of that
group, primarily for their archeological wonders including several
ancient stone circles, smaller, but more immediate and accessible, than
Stonehenge in England, and Brochs, ancient defensive circular stone
fortresses. The Aigas Field Centre itself is a restored manor house, in
appearance resembling a small castle, with several very comfortable two
bedroom cottages for families, and exquisite gardens maintained
impeccably by Lady Lucy, our hostess and gourmet chef. Our host, Sir
John Lister-Kaye is one of Britain’s foremost naturalists and author of
numerous books is often home and conducts several of the talks for our
program. Although many of the images were taken outside of Aigas on our
various field trips, many others were shot on the Aigas grounds. For an
incredible experience (it doesn’t have to be an Elder Hostel, there are
programs throughout the year for everything), check them out.
